About the Item

The "Shiva Mandala" is internationally recognized as Art Donovan's most ambitious work and a seminal sculpture that defined both his own style and the ensuing genre of Steampunk art and design. It has been featured in over a dozen books and magazines and over 70 international design and culture websites. HISTORY: Created in 2009, this work and the historic museum exhibition that it inspired, kick-started the popularity of the Steampunk on the internet and subsequently validated 'Steampunk' as a bona fide art form. This sculpture was the deciding artwork that led Dr. Jim Bennett, the Director of The Museum of the History of Science, Oxford University, to accept Donovan's proposal to host and curate a Steampunk art and design exhibition. This exhibit, which was the first of it's kind in the world, became the highest attended show in the Museum's history. It is permanently featured on the Museum's website. MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS: The Museum of the History Of Science, University of Oxford 2009, The Seoul National Museum, South Korea 2014, The Southampton Arts Center 2017, as well as many gallery other venues in New York. DETAILS: The four "planets" orbit the large central piece which is an precise, (oversized) replica of an ancient Persian astrolabe created in 1391 by Muhammad Ibn Ali Bakr. The astrolabe created here is made of mahogany and translucent materials and is beautifully illuminated from the rear. It has 36 points of embedded small lights that circle mahogany bezel. The Shiva Mandala's astrolabe art is precise down to the original Persian script rendered here in gold leaf. The original brass astrolabe, from which the center portion of this sculpture is inspired, is housed in the collection of The Museum of the History of Science at Oxford University. The Shiva Mandala is entirely hand-painted in rich mahogany, black, warm gray and feaqturs gold leaf, Arabic script throughout. A hand made, 24-hour clock with swinging pendulum and holographic "eye" is located at the top. This original clock design is emblematic of the Masonic 'Past Master's' symbol. The brass Shiva statue at 9:00 rotates at a very slow 1 RPM. The Shiva's Planets at 3:00 and 9:00 have various iterations, as you will see in the photos. All variations, including custom variations, are available. A spectacular, One-Of-A-Kind work designed and built and hand painted by Art Donovan. INSTALLATION: This piece requires a sizable, visual berth and should not be placed in a busy environment. The minimum height of a 9' ceiling is necessary for proper installation.
