About the Item

The “Atomic Lamp”, designed in the 1960s by Swiss architect Robert Haussmann, is far more than a lighting fixture — it is a poetic, architectural light structure that embodies the radical design spirit of its era. Originally conceived for the new Stadttheater in Ingolstadt, the lamp was Haussmann’s luminous response to the building’s raw Brutalist architecture: a glimmering, ethereal cloud of light suspended within a concrete shell. Constructed from hexagonal modules — reminiscent of honeycomb cells — connected by polished aluminum rods and black plastic joints, the design is modular, sculptural, and spatially dynamic. Each layer interlocks at key structural points, allowing for vertical and horizontal expansion. The result is a floating, ever-transformable structure in which the visible form gradually dissolves, and light itself becomes the dominant presence. Haussmann’s approach challenged the conventions of lighting design. Instead of treating light as a mere technical necessity, he explored its potential as a plastic, emotional, and atmospheric medium. The Atomic Lamp reflects this ambition perfectly — occupying a space between precision and play, between architectural discipline and poetic freedom. Although the design allowed for mass adaptation — and was later distributed in modified forms by Swisslamps International — Haussmann’s original vision was never about industrial production. It was about solving spatial problems with elegance and imagination. He later even created a playful DIY version for his own home, using off-the-shelf lamp sockets and colored bulbs — a testament to the design’s versatility and his own humorous distance from the myth of the object. Today, the Atomic Lamp is a rare collector’s piece and a masterclass in mid-century light sculpture — a design that turns light into a structural material and transforms space into an experience.
