About the Item
Berlin Deko Eight-Light Brass Chandelier by Franz Haegele for Schwintzer & Gräff
This brass-and-glass composition revolves around a central axis and culminates in a spherical brass finial. Eight arms radiate from the central axis. Each arm curves downward in a precise arc before turning at a right angle into a horizontal brass mount that holds the light bulb socket, resembling the abstraction of an uraeus snake, as seen in Bruno Paul's snake chandeliers. The body encasing the electrical socket rests on a thin rod. This rod passes through the horizontal mount and ends in a small sphere below, mirroring the orbit of the central finial around the central axis. Each light is surmounted by a transparent, frosted glass disc. Like the rings of Saturn, the discs are framed by brass. Former candlelight drip pans serve as shades and represent the Uranian principle—the transformation from atavistic to electric. The fusion of this design element with the abstracted uraeus snake, which resonates with Aby Warburg’s 1923 Kreuzlingen lecture on the Hopi snake ritual, illustrates transition and dissolution — the ensoulement of the inanimate.
This architectural structure suggests a luminous orbital constellation. It could illuminate a room where the relationship between the cosmic system and the soul is illustrated.
