About the Item
A Berlin Deko eight light chandelier made of a silver toned alloy, echoing the appearance of pewter. Most likely by Vereinigte Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk, circa 1919.
A founding member of the Vereinigte Werksstätten für Kunst im handwerk was Bruno Paul. His work is characterized by a combination of neoclassical and baroque forms. Here, the central sphere, taken from a Friesian Baroque brass chandelier, is combined with neoclassical elements such as the scrolling leaves on each of the eight branches.
This piece reflects the transitional moment between late historicism and early modernism in Berlin: reduced in ornament, resolute in presence.
