Brass Pendant Lamp with Textured Opal Glass Shade, Europe Mid-20th Century

About the Item

Pendant lamps got their name from the Latin word "pendere," which means "to hang down." One of the great things about pendant lamps - besides their stylish look - is that they are a great option to make interiors appear more spacious. As practical pieces of interior design, they can be used to concentrate light, or to just add an accent to the room. This pendant lamp brings together brass and glass to achieve a timeless look, associated with the heyday of modern design. The open brass body is composed of a canopy, anchoring the piece to the ceiling and a straight cylindrical stem, which leads to the structure of the frame supporting the shade. This shade is the central visual element of the piece due to it’s organic, textured look, which allows light to envelop its surroundings, while managing to avoid creating harsh shadows. The airy, open outline created by the frame also captivates the eye, reminiscent of a dangling piece of jewellery, such as a pendant hanging from a necklace, thus staying true to its name. In addition, while the design is quite succinct with clear lines and precision in even the smallest details, it still possesses a luxuriously stylish impression. The pairing of glass and brass is perhaps one of the most iconic material duos in European lighting design, and for good reason: the light emitted from the glass shades brightens up the colour of the metal to create a modern and stylish effect.
