The pearl chandelier is clearly inspired by organic forms, lily pads, oyster shells, plant tendrils, but at the same time is a rationally conceived, architectural form that is driven by the material of its construction: wood. Woodworkers must work within the discipline imposed by the strengths and limitations of their medium. Like the triangulated trusses of a timber form barn, the carved arms and supports are shaped to carry their weight, and function as members of a well-balanced wooden structure. Carving of this quality declined with the passing of the great masters of Art Nouveau, Gaudi, Majorelle, Guimard, etc. The pearl is a modern reinvention of this tradition one hundred years later.
The furniture and lighting of Thomas Newman Studio is defined by organic forms executed with artisanal excellence. Focusing on the sensual, sculptural, carved, and twisting elements in wood, Thomas Newman Studio is pleased to introduce a new collaboration with designer Vladimir Krasnogorov.
As a young man, Thomas Newman studied art history at Swarthmore College. A self-taught woodworker, he now celebrates a fifty-year career and is considered a master craftsman. Thomas’ work has been sourced by nearly every major design firm in New York City as well as countless publications including most recently, Wallpaper Magazine’s “Best of 2019” issue.
Vladimir Krasnogorov joined the studio in 2001. As the principal designer for this new collection, his designs achieve balance, harmony, and proportion in new forms for an entirely new vision.

The lighting and furniture collection created by Vlad Krasnogorov reflect an effort to achieve balance, harmony and proportion in new forms.
While notably organic, the collection has a sculptural sophistication that one might call “Nouvelle Art Nouveau.” Krasnogorov Studio focuses on the natural world, celebrating its beauty, balance and evocative power.
Formerly known as Thomas Newman Studio, the company was founded by Thomas W. Newman, the proud builder of more than 600 custom tables featured by many of New York City’s most prestigious interior designers. Now that Thomas Newman has retired, the studio will continue to build on his legacy, conceiving and creating lighting and furniture that honor expert artisanry while still exploring bold new possibilities in design.
