About the Item

A large antique French Empire-style neoclassical chandelier in silvered bronze. The chandelier is suspended from a crown-shaped canopy decorated with acanthus leaves and laurel bands. Heavy chain links in alternating rectangular and circular forms connect the crown to the central body, converging at an acorn-form finial above the stem. The stem rises from a circular body with molded bands and applied floral medallions, terminating in a domed lower section ornamented with acanthus mounts and a pinecone pendant finial. Twelve scrolling candle arms extend from the circular body, arranged evenly in a radial pattern. Each arm is cast with neoclassical motifs, including acanthus leaves, rosettes, and floral sprays, terminating in flared drip pans with vertical leaf borders. The arms are joined to the central body by mounts in the form of flower rosettes framed with scrollwork. The drip pans hold electrified candle-form lights with glass flame-shaped tips, replicating the original candlelight effect. The chandelier is constructed of cast and silvered bronze, a material frequently used in high-quality French lighting of the Empire style. The design reflects neoclassical influences through its use of acanthus, laurel, and classical floral ornament. Chandeliers of this type were produced by leading French bronze workshops of the mid 19th century, often supplied for palatial interiors where neoclassical design was favored.
