Louis XV Bronze and Rock Crystal Chandelier from the Hôtel de Talleyrand

About the Item

This absolutely magnificent chandelier was made in the 19th century from bronze doré and exquisitely clear rock crystal. Rock crystal is made from quartz mined from the ground, and is usually quite cloudy. The higher quality the rock crystal, the clearer the crystal. As you can see in the photographs, the crystals on this chandelier are exceptionally clear, of the highest quality rock crystal. Additionally, there are exceptional pieces of large rock crystal in the stem of the chandelier, as well as the ball hanging at the finial. This chandelier hung in the Paris residence of Baron James-Mayer de Rothschild, the legendary Hôtel de Talleyrand. The Hôtel de Talleyrand is a pivotal site where over 100 years of diplomacy occurred, and where the Rothschild's lived an opulent life of lavish entertainment. The building was purchased by the U.S. Government in 1947, becoming the site of the Marshall Plan to restore Europe. The Hôtel de Talleyrand is still used today to host and receive diplomatic guests. Starting in 1999 and until 2006, the U.S. Government restored the building. Many of the original decorative elements are still in use, making this chandelier a truly rare find. Note that the chandelier is visible hanging in The Hôtel de Talleyrand in the attached article. Look to the rightmost black-and-white picture, where the chandelier hangs above a Marshall Plan meeting in the Rothschild Main Dining Room.
