About the Item

Small model 1770 "Tornado" pendant light by Elio Martinelli for Martinelli Luce. 60s. This light is comprised of interlocking steel bands which join a central stem in a gracefully geometric configuration. It emits beautifully dispersed light. Elio Martinelli (Lucca, November 19, 1921–October 21, 2004) was a 20th century Italian lighting designer. His Mid-Century Modern aesthetic celebrated streamlined form and elegant function and came to be a definitive design force of the era, a status reinforced by the fact that his creations have joined prestigious collections, including that of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Taking his design sensibilities from what he saw as the simplicity of nature while also playing with new materials and geometry, Martinelli captivated audiences with his combination of streamlined geometry and radiant elegance. This combination elevated Martinelli’s fixtures to the status of enticing art objects rather than merely a functional means of illuminating a space, resulting in a body of work that attracted clients around the globe.

Glass Pendant Lamp “Kappa” Model by Sergio Mazza for Artemide 60s
By Artemide, Sergio Mazza
Located in Padova, IT
Sergio Mazza is an Italian designer born in 1931 in Milan. In 1955 he began his free profession and since 1961 he has been working alongside G. Gramigna in the Smc studio, working in the furniture and industrial design fields. Among the various acknowledgments and prizes received, we recall the mention at the Compasso d'Oro 1960 for the Delta lamp by Artemide and the silver medal for the Italian apartment at the X Triennale in Milan. From 1967 he also began to design for Olivari, signing the Macco handles, up to the Giuliana model, with Gramigna, in 1987. In the publishing field, again with Gramigna, he directed the "Ottagono" magazine from its foundation until 1988. Artemide is a company specialized in the production of lighting accessories (lamps, chandeliers, light points), founded by Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza in 1959. The brand has been characterized since the beginning by a great attention to the design that has allowed over the years to win numerous international awards for its products. Among the most prestigious names in Italian design, Artemide is also one of the world's leading companies in high-end residential and professional lighting. Already in 1967 he received his first prize the prestigious Compasso d'Oro for the Eclisse lamp, designed by Vico Magistretti. This award is followed by many others, nationally and internationally, making Artemide one of the symbolic companies in the design lamp sector. In 1996 Artemide made its own a new manifesto, in which it still identifies itself today: with the motto "The Human Light...
