Arts and Crafts Chandeliers and Pendants

ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Arts and Crafts Enameled Glass Pendant w. Floral Pattern & Wrought Iron Canopy
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning work of lighting art with unique color and floral pattern. If you are passionate about early 20th century glass art in general and Arts & Crafts lighting in particular then you will love this one of a kind, art glass light fixture. What you are seeing here is an extremely rare, enameled glass pendant. This stylish and truly classy pendant is signed 'Selin' or 'Felin' or 'Gelin' and we cannot find another light by this, clearly very talented, maker anywhere else in the world. With late 19th and early 20th century lighting being one of our specialities, we can tell you that in our 30+ years of dealing in special fixtures, we have only seen fixtures of this quality and beauty by the likes of Galle and Schneider. Their fixtures were made with the exact same techniques that were used to create this antique work of art. Both the design and the colors make this unique light at least as impressive as the Galle and Schneider ones. What makes this unique light extra desirable is the original and also handcrafted and handpainted, wrought iron canopy. It is the perfect finish to this wonderful antique fixture. Apart from the perfectly matching, replacement mat black chain this one of a kind light fixture is over 100 years old and it is of such great quality and condition that it will at least be around for another 100 years. One fine day this unique pendant could grace the collection of a museum, but until then you could be its first next custodian. Mind you, this pendant has been professionally rewired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage in the USA as well. Because of the warm and pleasant color that it radiates this, to us, is the perfect, serene pendant...

Stunning & Mint Condition Brass and Cut Glass Arts and Crafts Chandelier, 1910s
Located in Lisse, NL
Perfectly handmade, European Arts and Crafts four-light chandelier. If you are looking for a stylish and beautiful chandelier to grace your living space then this fine specimen from the earliest years of the 1900s could be yours to own and enjoy soon. All handcrafted using quality materials only this Arts and Crafts era chandelier breathes the kind of class that early 20th century craftsman were known for. Because of the stylish floral patterns this antique work of lighting art is like an ode to mother nature herself. We 'Dutchies' have a special connection with flowers in general and with daisy flowers in particular and if this antique light fixture is not Dutch then we understand very well why it ended up here. The three brass arms and also the 'base' in which the large, cut-glass shade hangs all come with stunning and typical Arts and Crafts, embossed style elements / decorations. All the detailed and precise engravings in all the glass shades were hand-done and for all the glass shades to be in mint condition after more than 100 years, to us, is like a minor miracle. The large, handcrafted, hand-engraved and partially colored glass shade too has stylized flower motifs in it and the combination of materials makes this antique chandelier an absolute joy to look at. With as much as four sockets this relatively small chandelier can easily light up a living room or dining area of a regular-size home or apartment. Mind you, this antique light fixture will be wired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage in the country where she will be used and enjoyed. Our reasonable price for this rare, great looking and excellent condition antique includes perfect packing (in a custom made box) and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Measures : Maximum height x diameter: 23.8 x 25.6 inches. Diameter of the large cut glass & colored shade only: 9.9 inches. Diameter of the original and timeless brass canopy: 5.7 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Arts & Crafts Chandelier with a Great Owl Sculpture & Perfect Alabaster Shades
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique, antique, stunning and all handcrafted 6 light chandelier. Some chances you only get once in your lifetime and that is exactly what we thought when we first saw this marvelous Arts and Crafts era pendant. The six hand carved arms are like stems of flowers growing out of the base of this chandelier and the perfect (both design and condition-wise) alabaster shades are like stylized blooming flowers. Just like the six mint arms, the monumental and mint circular 'base' too is all hand-crafted and hand carved out of soilid oak and with a stunning row of large oak beads between the top and bottom section. Together with the equally unique and also handcrafted, original 'rope-chains' they are just some of the elements that make this antique extraordinary and truly a joy to own and to look at. However, to us, it is the remarkable and mint condition, hand carved owl sculpture in the middle of this chandelier that takes it to the next level. This beautiful and meaningful bird is the international symbol for wisdom and learning and in this case it is sitting perfectly upright with its 'river pearl eyes' always alert and present. If your vocation has anything to do with gaining or spreading knowledge and if you understand and appreciate the symbolic meaning of this owl chandelier...
