Model 2042/6 Design by Gino Sarfatti With Le Sfere Plafone, Model 2042/6 from 1963, another of Gino Sarfatti’s beautiful interpretations of the luminous sphere is reintroduced. The refined ceiling light is composed of six blown opaline glass spheres supported by a painted aluminium mount and structure with a Black or Champagne finish. Each sphere measures 20 cm in diameter and is gently held in place by the painted ring in a refined embrace that lends the luminaire a graphic expression and brings forth Le Sfere’s distinctive aesthetic. Le Sfere Plafone1963 / 2019 A new remarkable ceiling light from the Le Sfere luminaire system by Italian lighting master Gino Sarfatti is now reintroduced by Astep as part of the prestigious Flos with Sarfatti collection. The luminaire features six opaline glass spheres, which are inspired by the natural poetry of the Moon and capture the delicate moonlight in a gracious design. Throughout his life, the sky served as a muse for lighting master Gino Sarfatti. He was fascinated by the perfect light emitted by the Moon, and one of Gino Sarfatti’s most brilliant designs is inspired by the natural poetry of the luminous satellite. In 1959, Le Sfere was launched in a solar system of its own, revolving around a single luminous sphere. Le Sfere features a simple, yet elegant principle in which a blown opaline glass sphere is held in place by a painted aluminium ring. A refined embrace that lends the luminaire a graphic expression and brings forth its distinctive aesthetic. The Le Sfere collection is a multifaceted, open-minded luminaire system, suitable for illuminating all kinds of spaces with its ambient moonlight, from a modest corridor to exclusive private and commercial settings. The collection was gradually expanded to fit larger commissioned projects. Among them is the famous Teatro Regio in Turin, Italy, where Le Sfere can still be seen in a variety of compositions, including cascades and columns, that emphasise the genius and beauty of the system. The Le Sfere collection is the largest product family by Gino Sarfatti with models that have developed over time, from the first single sphere, Model 237, to the iconic twenty-four-sphere chandelier. All created from the same fundamental principle: a beautiful interpretation of the perfect luminous sphere. Flos with Sarfatti Collection The capsule collection Flos with Sarfatti is a tribute to the great Italian master of light created in a close collaboration between the lighting companies Astep and Flos. Astep is the sole worldwide distributor of the Flos with Sarfatti Collection. With great respect for Gino Sarfatti’s cultural legacy and in a shared mission of design innovation, Astep and Flos explore the wide-ranging Arteluce collection in order to selectively reissue and reintroduce a selection of luminaires with a highly contemporary design expression. The Flos with Sarfatti collection is a tribute to Gino Sarfatti, the leading Italian master of lighting design, who had designed over 600 fixtures between 1939 and 1973. With a constant dedication to research and innovation, he introduced new typologies, functions and light sources from the fluorescent tubes to the first halogens. Many of his designs still appear remarkably contemporary in terms of form, aesthetics, and the relationship they establish with the observer. From June 2017, selected luminaire designs by Gino Sarfatti have been distributed by Astep under licence from Flos as part of the prestigious Flos with Sarfatti collection. With respect for the origin of the design, Astep’s and Flos’s roots and the proud artisanal and industrial traditions, the Flos with Sarfatti collection is made in Italy.

That a spiky, futuristic chandelier named “Sputnik,” which was highly suggestive of the Soviet satellite of the same name, designed by an Italian engineer could predate the space age and the satellite’s launch by a few decades is the stuff of legend. But in 1939, Venetian-born Gino Sarfatti channeled his obsession with light and expert engineering skills into a design so bold it predicted the future. He would go on to design around 700 lighting products in his lifetime — each table lamp, wall light, pendant and chandelier superb and unorthodox in shape.

Sarfatti’s singular focus on creating opulent lighting designs that were rational in their use of resources makes him one of the most innovative lighting designers in history. He was studying to be an aeronautical engineer at the University of Genoa when his family’s financial troubles led him to drop out and move to Milan to help. During this time, he built a lamp for a friend using a coffee machine’s electric components and a glass vase. This exercise sparked his fascination with lighting, and he went on to found Arteluce in 1939. What followed was a period of working with skilled artisans and tinkering with materials instead of sketching. The self-taught designer soon established himself as a creator of provocative, sculptural luxury lighting. Through the company, he collaborated with some of the 20th century’s most influential designers, such as Vittoriano Viganò, who worked on Arteluce lighting between 1946 and 1960. In the 1950s and ’70s, Franco Albini, Franca Helg, Ico Parisi and Massimo Vignelli all contributed designs.

Sarfatti used resources mindfully and injected functionality into everything he designed. His light fixtures were lightweight, easy to take apart and reassemble and could be affordably repaired. This marriage of utilitarianism and glamour lent Sarfatti’s designs a clean, minimal yet arresting splendor, based on their graphical forms and construction.

After World War II, Sarfatti embraced new wiring technologies and materials like plexiglass, such as his 1972 project with Carlo Mollino that filled the Teatro Regio in Turin with hundreds of plexiglass pipes. In 1973, Sarfatti sold Arteluce to FLOS. His foresight, invention and fearlessness as a designer are revered to this day.
