About the Item

Cast bronze lamp with a surrealist shapes Lampshade in white fabric Limited edition of 8 ex. after a model created in the 1970s. Signed and numbered. Limited edition of 8 + 4 AP of a model created in the 1970's by the sculptor Victor Roman. Victor Roman was born in 1937 in Martinis in Romania. In 1950, he leaves his village to to go high-school in Tirgu-Mures. He then studies at the Fine Arts Institute Nicolae Grigorescu of Bucharest. He meets his first success with a personal exhibition in 1962. The next year, he receives the Sculpture prize of the Artists Union of Romania. He then settles in Paris in 1968 with only 170 Francs in his pocket and the luxury edition of Brave Soldat Svejk by Hasek. In Marc Gaillard's book, Victor Roman compares himself to this fictional soldier, resembling an ingenuous character of Voltaire. Roman's sculpture stands at the crossroad of countryside influences and Romanian culture, and yet it manages to take us to a dreamlike world. Sculpting clay to begin with, the original matter, Roman then starts working with bronze. Bronze enables his terra cottas to become resistant to space: “The earth represents living matter, as if I were touching skin. When a piece is translated into bronze, finished with my own hands, I touch it as if it were clay, it is still skin, but maybe more noble, stronger and which may breathe even ore life.” The mirror of cast bronze presented at the Biennale des Antiquaires shows the work of this enigmatic artist-craftsman. This sculpture-object with surrealist shapes brings to mind an imaginary world originating in archaic forms from Victor Roman's childhood in Transylvania. Victor Roman takes part in many major projects in France. He is honored in 1974 with the Concours prize for a public order piece for the city of Bobigny. He creates monumental pieces for several French cities such as Créteil, Villiers-le-Bel, Noisy-le-Sec or Guyancourt. This sculptor left us many works and made a mark on the art history of the 60's till the 90's. This creator of unique forms is now one of the most renowned sculptors. Victor Roman passed away on April 12th 1995.
