Big Step Lamp is a contemporary handmade lamp from the Forms Collection, made in gypsum. The sculpture’s form alludes to ambition and enlightenment in a playful way. The lamp’s smooth, organic curves invites the viewer to explore its surface with feel.
The “Forms” collection is a series of hand-carved sculptures that explore the balance and harmony found in asymmetrical shapes. Each piece is an exploration of the contrast between the absence of symmetry and the sensation of stability. The artist is captivated by the interplay of organic and simple lines, creating abstract shapes that seem familiar yet have never been seen before. The goal of the collection is to achieve a sense of tranquility and serenity within the viewer, by creating sculptures that not only complement their surroundings, but also synergize with them.
The inspiration for the collection comes from our fascination with the natural world and its ability to create harmony and balance in unexpected ways. The forms are sculpted by hand, using traditional carving techniques to create distinct finishes that mimic the textures and patterns found in nature. The sculptures are fired in bisque ware, without glazing, to give the richness of true ceramic texture.
The final result is a collection of sculptures that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also have the power to evoke emotions and inspire introspection. Each piece is a reflection of the artist’s journey to find balance and harmony in life, and serves as a reminder to the viewer to seek the same in their own lives. The idea was born after deciding to reconnect with my family and my grandfather – a sculptor artist. Learning to sculpt and being a designer compelled me to combine these two mediums and use their best values. Experimenting with the functionality of sculpture and the meaning of furniture led me to create the collection.
Studio AOAO is an interdisciplinary studio combining art and design. It was created by Alicja Strzyzynska and Onur Iseri in Amsterdam in 2020.
“We specialise in making sculptural pieces by experimenting with the functionality of sculpture and the meaning of furniture. In our works, we focus on the emotional connection between the object and the user. All of our work seeks the experience of intimacy and the metaphysical bond between personal interaction and meaningful narrative. Through sculptural value and reflective design, we aim to create pieces that last for generations and help reduce environmental waste.”
The inspiration to sculpt came from Alicja’s roots, her grandfather – an artist sculptor. Alicja completed Masters of Arts Degree in Product and Visual Communication Design at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and finished her bachelor degree in Interior Architecture. Alicja previously worked in Tokyo and Amsterdam in architectural design studios. Onur completed his business studies in Japan and worked in digital design & marketing as well as teaching in Tokyo.
