Large Wrought Iron Grapnel Style Boat Anchor Fitted as Lamp, France 19th Century

About the Item

A unique source of illumination, this large wrought iron boat anchor has been fitted with a lamp socket and harp. Originally from France (1800s), the stockless grapnel style anchor has a wonderful light patination of oxidation from exposure to the elements. The anchor is extremely stable, thanks to the four weighty flukes that resemble a grappling hook (hence the name grapnel). Each fluke is topped by a thick, flattened bill adorned with a thin recession. An octagonal bolt envelops the top of each fluke, with a tapering column rising above the hub. At the top of the column is a thick eyelet with a large hoop running through it, alongside a 10-link chain. A hex bolt has been affixed to the side of the eyelet, supporting a professionally installed US standard volt socket and harp. Our large grapnel-style anchor lamp would make a fantastic floor lamp for an office or library. Of course, the socket can also be removed so that the anchor can be used a unique piece of sculptural art. The approximate weight of the lamp is 72 lbs.
