About the Item

This absolutely rare floor lamp was made by the German designer and artist Günter Ssymmanks in 1956. This special lamp was a prototype and was a limited edition of 20. They were never for sale. He just gave it to friends. The ball is out of polyamide and the black lacquered base was produced together with Vitra and the five star base is from a Eames chair. Originally the polyamide light ball was designed for the Berlin Philharmonie which was designed by Hans Scharoun. He commissioned Günther Ssymmanks to buid a lamp. After he finished the lamp Scharoun desided to hang the lamp also in the national library. Ssymmanks invented the new technique with BASF. It is the beginning of the Space Age area. Ssymmanks also designed the famous lamp "Simanka SY1" for the Museum of Modern Art in Ney York. It is one of the first Space Age pieces ever made. The lamp is in good original vintage condition. A absolute beautiful and special lamp which is hard to find a second time. A unique piece which is a great eyecatcher for your antique, modern, Space Age or midcentury interior. All pieces are looked after in our own restoration workshop. We also can do new upholstery cover or other special requests. Space Age: The Space Age or Space Age is the epoch of technical progress since the middle of the 20th century. It is characterized by space research, space technologies and the influences these developments have had on many areas of daily life. The beginning of the Space Age is generally equated with the launch of the first Sputnik satellite on October 4, 1957. However, the term "Space Age" was already used shortly after the end of World War II in Harry Harper's book Dawn of the Space Age and referred to the altitude record of the German V2 rockets in 1944. Midcentury: The midcentury period was an age of dreams and optimism. In the post-war-years, after all the chaos and crisis of a global conflict, the world began to rebuild and rethink itself.
