About the Item

Pair of floor lamps produced in Sweden by ASEA belysning. Made from solid brass and teak stems with a nice concave shape. New lamp shades in hand sewn chintz fabric with single pleating, matching the aluminum uplight fixture. The fixture makes it possible to adjust the light with either up or down light or both a the same time for a variety of moods. Hans Bergström's remarkable design journey spans from the functionalism of the 1930s to the Swedish Modern movement of the 1940s. However, it is in the 1950s, with the advent of plastic, that Bergström truly emerges as a trailblazer, being one of the first to embrace this innovative material in modern lighting design. Even at a young age, before graduating from the School of Art and Design in Stockholm, Bergström showcased his design prowess by presenting himself as a designer for Ystad Metall at the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930. Just two years later, his graduation project—a magnificent chandelier for the church in Iggesund—marked the beginning of his journey as Sweden's first lighting architect. This pivotal moment set him on a path where he would continually push boundaries and explore new possibilities in the world of lighting design. Bergström's artistic evolution took him from the constraints of strict functionalism to the creation of decorative luminaire models. Eventually, he ventured into the realm of revolutionary materials, including acrylic glass and plastic spraying. These liberating mediums unleashed the sculptor within Bergström, allowing him to shape his creations with a newfound sense of freedom and innovation. Through historical records, vintage magazines, oral stories passed down from relatives and close friends, and descriptions from the workers at Ateljé Lyktan, a vivid portrait emerges of a man deeply enamored with gardens, nature, antiquity, and Italy. These passions became the driving forces behind his designs, often embodied in intricate details such as driven brass leaves and brass birds adorning cage lamps, chandeliers, and plafonds. As a lighting architect, Bergström had a unique vision. He believed that light should not be confined within a dull screen; instead, it should shimmer behind folded chintz fabric, illuminate through acrylic glass, or radiate freely from a cage adorned with golden birds in flight. For him, the essence of light was its purity and freedom, and he sought to create luminaires that allowed the light to shine unencumbered. White light, with its pristine radiance, became the guiding principle of his designs. Hans Bergström's legacy as a pioneering lighting architect and designer is one that marries functionality with artistic expression. His exploration of new materials, his passion for nature and beauty, and his unwavering commitment to the purity of light have left an indelible mark on the world of design. His creations continue to captivate and inspire, showcasing the timeless elegance and visionary thinking of a true luminary in the field. Price for the pair of lamps.
