About the Item

The model was designed for the interior of Hotel Continental, Vasagatan, Stockholm. The hotel was built between 1960 and 1963, with the interior designed by Carl-Axel Acking. Carl-Axel Acking (1910–2001) was a prominent Swedish architect and designer known for his refined approach to modernism. Active throughout much of the 20th century, he created buildings, interiors, and furniture that combined functional clarity with understated elegance. Acking’s relationship with lighting continued to evolve throughout his career, accompanied by a steady flow of public interior commissions. Following his role as chief architect for the groundbreaking H55 exhibition, he designed, around 1963, a series of wall and ceiling fixtures in polished brass for Hotel Continental in Stockholm. This model demonstrates how Acking had by then embraced the restrained modernism of the post-war period. With no visible light bulbs, the light is directed upwards and downwards, while the polished, subtly folded brass reflects and interacts with the light, creating a play of shadows and highlights. Provenance: Valsätra Church, Sweden.
