Pair of Large Italian Neoclassical Carved Giltwood Two-Light Wall Sconces
About the Item
This pair of very large wall sconces was made in Italy in the mid-20th century in the neoclassical style, using carved wood with a gilt finish. The design is based on 18th-century models and includes classical motifs such as acanthus leaves, floral rosettes, and urn-shaped elements arranged in a symmetrical layout.
Each sconce features an open framework composed of stacked carved rings joined by laurel branches and topped with a scallop shell crest. At the center, an urn form with leaf carving sits above two outward-curving candle arms. The arms are decorated with scrolls and rosettes and hold simple upright candle holders. A carved drop finial hangs beneath a fan-shaped base with a central brass backplate.
These sconces were made using traditional wood carving techniques. Once carved, the surface was covered in gold leaf and lightly toned to show contrast in the carved details.
