About the Item

This beautiful pair of Italian sconces are made of burnished iron and tole, each featuring a pair of bobeches with real gold leaf. The craftsmanship in the flowing scroll work shows a detailed sense of balance and movement. Each piece in our shop is professionally rewired and in working order. They have been rewired at our fourth generation antique store in The French Quarter of New Orleans. Each chandelier and lantern comes with a vintage canopy, three feet of chain, and ample wire, and each sconce comes with all materials needed to mount. Each piece is newly wired with UL approved wire and sockets and is fully operable. This piece is a collection of a fourth generation, family owned business in New Orleans called The French Antique Shop. The store was first opened by Marie and Marcel Granet in Paris when they married in 1927. A jewish family, they came to the United States before the outbreak of the Second World War, leaving on the last boat out of Paris' port, Le Havre. When they reached New Orleans, they fell in love with the Vieux Carre as it reminded them of home. Their first shop here in New Orleans was located on Chartres Street in the French Quarter and was stocked originally with pieces they had brought with them from Paris. They moved to Royal Street and settled in their present expanded location at 225 Royal Street in 1947. Today, the shop is run by the third and fourth generation, Marc, and his two sons Michael and Brian. This gorgeous pair of 19th century Empire sconces are made of bronze and tole, and feature fantastically stylized Egyptian figures on each back plate. Note the details in the wings, the fabric and hands with fingers resting on the arms. The canter features a delicately detailed wreath above a flaming, winged torch. The four arms are beautifully detailed as well, with each bobeche featuring acanthus leaves and a profiled face. At bottom, the Egyptian figure’s feet rests on a golden bronze ball.
