Poul Henningsen design copper wall light, model 4,5 /3, manufactured by Louis Poulsen. “Form is given in a perfect mastery of the material.” - Poul Henningsen In just ten words, Poul Henningsen summarizes his theory of lighting design. He believed that function and structure should be determined first, then form and artistic value should meet to fulfill that need. Originally designed for exterior use, we found this set of four lamps on the same building, all with the rich patina from decades of oxidation and natural aging. Henningsen chose copper as his medium for the PH 4,5/3 as part of his PH series. and devised a three-shade system to obscure the light source and diffuse it efficiently thus covering a larger area creating a softer glare free environment. The PH lamp is a series of three shade lamps conceived by the legendary lighting designer Poul Henningsen. after a decade of development using mathematic equations and elaborate experiments, Henningsen devised a means to control the contrast of light and shadow, diffuse reflection and, minimize glare with his curved multi shade system. In 1925 louis Poulson applied for the paten of the PH lamp, explaining the shade system drawn over a logarithmic spiral. The first PH series lamp was exhibited in 1926, produced in 1927, revolutionizing the lighting industry. The PH lamp was produced in a variety of sizes and materials and models. Desk, wall and floor models, all carry the name PH followed by a fraction that represents the shade size. These exterior fixtures were first manufactured in 1966 although they were part of the patented 1927 PH series, this is one of the last creations introduced before Henninsens death. A highlight to any exterior and quite possibly even more beautiful when used as an interior fixture, the PH4,5 /3 is one our favorite Henningsen designs. We find that we can never have too many; inquire about our wide selection. One of our favorite designs, for use both indoor and out, we have found that you can never have too many ... we found these from the same building in Denmark, all four fixtures sharing a similar and complimentary patina. sold as a set of four.
