About the Item
The Sun Calendar harnesses the sun to illuminate mirrored fragmented images of time and place. Made of a rectangular grid of square reflective photovoltaic panels, it represents linear time by mirroring a fragmented image of what's directly across from. It reflects cyclical time by representing the sun's rhythms in the shape of its curve, where each panel faces the sun optimally according to the seasons.
Its pixelated appearance refers to the fragmented sense of time we experience in the digital world. In addition, the LED lights replay the daily movement of the sun after dark, underlining slow biological sun rhythms.
As opposed to the lightning speed of information transfer on digital screens, this photovoltaic screen operates according to the slow passage of the sun in its energy transfer. It engages us in a slower type of perceptive process that may allow the mind to rest in a moment of reflection as opposed to reaction. The duration of multi-sensual experience of solar rhythms allows us to connect with nature’s clock, strengthening mental apprehension of biology.
Resembling a typical monthly wall calendar that is divided into squares, the screen makes palpable the overlapping of the passage of the sun with a clock-based calendar of months and hours. The calendar/screen takes the form of a three-dimensional field consisting of a slowly moving grid of shadow patterns and larger evolving geometric shapes of projected sunlight. This diurnal and seasonal schedule of sun diagrams operates according to a cyclical notion of time. Waking and sleeping rituals that take place around the bedroom hallway reinforce these cycles. The lights will be programmed to shine faintly during the periods of dawn and dusk, and more brightly during full darkness. Also, the memory of the repetitive and predictable yearly sun passage is represented by the curved shape of the screen based on optimum energy collection throughout the year.

View AllLatitude Light, Wood or Recycled Steel Contemporary, Solar-Powered, Customizable
By Nina Edwards Anker
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Latitude light is an indoor or outdoor solar-powered lamp that emits atmospheric light. It can be fabricated in many variants according to the customer’s location and color preference. A global product that is customized for specific locations, the lamp’s geometry can be automatically updated in a digital file so that the tilt of the solar panel changes according to latitude. By tilting the panel at different angles, the light’s capacity for electric power generation is optimized in its perpendicularity to the sun’s rays for different latitudes. Two intersecting cubes...

Solar Chandelier, Contemporary Capiz Shell Solar-Powered Lighting, Customizable

Hanging from strands of transparent wire, solar chandelier is made from photovoltaic modules that power LED bulbs to illuminate translucent materials of different kinds. The materials, size and height of the chandelier are customizable. Our team fabricates the entire piece in our studio at New Lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where we have access to the necessary tools.
Solar chandelier is a way of investigating solar cells as perceptual devices for mediating light into designed spaces. This eco-friendly lighting design incorporates environmental technology while providing ambient lighting and projecting shadow patterns. The piece aims to demystify PV technology by exposing its components in a legible manner. With a passing breeze, the chandelier functions as a wind chime. It also functions as a type of solar clock; the translucent seashells illuminate automatically at dusk, highlighting biological solar rhythms and power.
In its mix of organic and technological materials, solar chandelier's translucent seashells illuminate in a manner that aims to be affective in its application of solar technology. The seashells are electrically illuminated after dark. In the daytime, they are lit from the light passing through the window in front of which the chandelier must be placed in order to gather solar power...

Seashell Solar Chandelier, Contemporary Solar-Powered Lighting, Customizable
By Nina Edwards Anker
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Solar chandelier, a customizable solar-powered lighting installation for the off-the-grid living room, comprises photovoltaic modules that power LED bulbs to illuminate translucent seashells to provide ambient lighting. The piece aims to demystify PV technology by exposing its components in a legible manner, so that the electrical boards, wires and batteries of the PV modules are clearly visible and comprehensible.
Additionally, with a passing breeze, the chandelier becomes a wind chime. It also functions as a type of solar clock as it illuminates automatically at dusk, highlighting hourly solar and seasonal rhythms. The chandelier must be placed in front of a window to gather solar power. The Solar Chandelier lowers electric bills, eliminates wires and outlets, offers multi-directional ambient light, and casts patterns on surrounding surfaces like wallpaper. It can be customized to each setting.
