Wim Rietveld Panama Lamp No. 4050 by Wim Rietveld, ca. 1956

About the Item

Wim Rietveld, a celebrated Dutch industrial furniture designer and son of Gerrit Rietveld, was known for his innovative designs of lamps, chairs, and cabinets. Taking over as designer for Gispen in 1949, Wim focused on office furniture and lighting, aligning his creations with the principles of the *Goed Wonen* (Good Living) movement, which emphasized well-designed, affordable domestic goods. He believed in improving products through careful consideration of form, function, color, and price. This lamp, model no. 4050, was designed for Gispen in 1956. Nicknamed the "Panama hat" due to its sun hat-shaped hood, it features three hinges and a red key on the wall plate, allowing versatile positioning. A notable example of functional and stylish design, the lamp is part of the Stedelijk Museum’s collection in Amsterdam, underscoring Wim Rietveld’s impact on modern industrial design.
