Artemide Tizio HAL Micro Table Lamp in Black by Richard Sapper

About the Item

Tizio was designed by Industrial designer Richard Sapper in 1972. The sophisticated principal of fully adjustable balanced counterweights, lack of wires, and electrical conductor arms have made Tizio an illustrious award-winning design of the 20th century. Born in Germany in 1932, Richard Sapper created the Tizio desk lamp for Artemide in 1972. This now-Classic design has gone on to become one of the best-selling light fixtures ever produced. A prolific designer who famously turned down Steve Jobs offer of a job at Apple, Sapper died in 2015. Over a varied career spent designing everything from cars for Fiat to IBM’s first ThinkPad to multiple items for Alessi, he made a point of reducing technically- difficult design problems into concise, approachable items. As an icon of Italian design, Tizio graces the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It stands proud amongst the most celebrated icons of modern lighting, effortlessly blending function with style. Tizio identifies strongly with Artemide’s Human Light philosophy that places men and the pursuit of their well being at the core of research and development. Richard Sapper (1932-2015) was born in German but worked in Italy, and his work brings together the best design principles of both nations. On one hand the ‘Tizio’ lamp possesses a northern European emphasis on functionalism. It was conceived as the ideal table lamp by its creator because of its wide range of movements, based on precisely calibrated counterweights at the end of each of the arms. On the other hand, it has a radically lithe profile and dusky, equipoised sense of style redolent of southern European sensibilities. It has become “an icon of high-tech design”, according to the MoMA where an example exhibited, and had its heyday as the lamp of choice for the design-conscious bright young things...

Tizio lamp by Richard Sapper for the Italian publisher Artemide. He created this lamp in 1972, revolutionary for its time as the first lamp to use a halogen bulb, but also for its system of counterweights that perfectly balance the structure, allowing the user to position the light precisely on the desired area with a simple gesture of the hand. Selected in 1979 for the Compasso d'Oro, it was later incorporated into the MoMa's permanent collection. Still in production today, it now comes in three models: Tizio, Tizio micro...
