About the Item

The striking hand-painted majolica lamp features the portrait of a warrior surrounded by traditional Italian urns and fruits designs; the other side features an abstract design in the same yellow, orange, and blue palette. The urn with cover was converted into a lamp body, with carved wood base and brass fixtures added. Warm tomes of the wood complement rich, buttery yellow colors of the decor. The lamp is a stunning example of traditional Cantagalli design and exceptional craftsmanship; Cantagalli produced high quality, artisan manufactured reproductions and interpretations of Renaissance Italian Majolica, as well as pieces in the Islamic and Moresque styles. The urn was signed on the bottom with ITALY and what appears to be "Cantagalli: unfortunately, during the conversion to lamp parts of the signature were destroyed, with "Ca" and "alli" left on both sides of the opening. The lamp is fully operational and is in good vintage condition, newly rewired with the new socket. Ulisse Cantagalli was able to recreate the subtle finish seen on the lustered pottery from Valencia, Gubbia, and Deruta from 16th century, the technique that was considered lost. His early experiments with copper and ruby lustre on plates in Arabic-Moresque were awarded medals at the Milan Exhibition of 1881, and Prince Filangieri, founder of the Artistic Museum in Naples, arranged for lustre pieces to be ordered for his Museum. In 1890 at Universal Exhibition in Paris the Casa Cantagalli stand, inspired by the Venetian-Gothic, won the commendation of the British Museum. Antonio Mariani joined the firm in 1919, followed by Guido Balsamo Stella in 1921; Carlo Guerrini became the artistic director in 1923, bringing with him Romano Dazzi, Gianni Vagnetti, and Amerigo Menegatti. Powerhouse Museum in Sidney, Australia, British Museum, Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Glasgow Museum, and Edinburgh Museum have multiple examples of Cantagalli work. Large number of Cantagalli maiolica pieces was made for imports, including imports to United States. Height to the top of a socket is 16.5"
