About the Item

French Art Deco Table Lamp by Charles Schneider, Epinay-sur-Seine (Paris), 1910s — Wrought Iron & Mottled Glass Rare and refined, this French Art Deco table lamp was designed by renowned glass artist Charles Schneider in the 1910s at his Epinay-sur-Seine studio near Paris. A superb example of early Art Deco lighting, this piece features a hand-blown mottled glass shade crafted using Schneider’s signature “powdered glass” technique—where metal oxide-infused powders are carefully layered between sheets of glass to create rich, nuanced coloration. Suspended from an elegant wrought iron base with exceptional craftsmanship, the shade glows with understated sophistication when lit. This lamp is signed “Schneider” on the glass (see close-up photo), confirming its authenticity. Dimensions: Height: 14 in. (35.5 cm) Width: 10.6 in. (27 cm) Depth: 5.9 in. (15 cm) Fully rewired and professionally fitted for modern use (US, UK, EU, Australia, etc.). Compatible with LED bulbs. About Charles Schneider (1881–1953) Charles Schneider was one of the leading figures of the French Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass movement. Born near Paris, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and Paris, eventually working for Daum before launching his own factory in Epinay-sur-Seine in 1913 with his brother Ernest. The Schneider glassworks, later known for its Le Verre Français and Charder lines, produced some of the most innovative and accessible art glass of the 1920s. Drawing influence from Émile Gallé and the École de Nancy, Schneider pioneered techniques like acid-etched cameo glass, marqueterie de verre, and the use of colored glass powders—as seen in this lamp. Schneider's designs were sold at elite Parisian stores including Galeries Lafayette, Le Bon Marché, and Delvaux, and his works were widely exported, especially to the United States. This lamp is an early and rare example of Schneider’s transition from Art Nouveau to early Art Deco, capturing a pivotal moment in decorative arts history.
