About the Item

A finely hand-decorated terracotta table lamp from the esteemed L. Hjorth ceramic studio on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. Dating from the early 20th century, this piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and artistic vision for which Hjorth became renowned. The surface is adorned with fluid, organic motifs characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. Founded in 1859, L. Hjorth was one of Denmark’s premier ceramic houses, celebrated for producing high-quality, artistically significant pieces across generations. This lamp embodies the essence of Art Nouveau—a movement that sought to unify fine and decorative arts through graceful, nature-inspired forms and asymmetrical lines. Whether placed in a classic or contemporary setting, it offers an elegant and timeless presence. "Art Nouveau is an international ornamental art style that characterized architecture, fine art and especially decorative arts across Europe and the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. The term ‘Art Nouveau’ (literally ‘New Art’) was first used in 1884 in Belgium but the movement was known by many different names in different countries: Jugendstil in Germany, Viennese Secession in Austria, Glasgow Style in Scotland, Arte Nuova or Stile Liberty in Italy, and Belle Époque in France." NB: Sold without the lampshade.

The factory had great success internationally, and already by 1880 Hjorth's articles were sold in the big department stores of Paris, London and Berlin, and as far away as in Australia, New York and Sct. Thomas. The factory also participated in the big World Exhibitions in Altona 1869, London 1870 and 1874 as well as New Orleans 1885. One of Hjorths Fabrik's biggest successes and Denmark's first real stoneware series is the grey-brown stoneware.
