About the Item

‘Daffodil’ table lamp by Tiffany Studios American, c. 1910 Height 56cm, diameter 40cm Designed and hand-made by the artisans from the renowned Tiffany Studios (1902-1932), this ‘Daffodil’ table lamp is an example of the studio’s creations which are now considered design icons. The lampshade is made from leaded glass. The process of its creation was very time-consuming as its makers, some of the best in America, hand-picked the best and most appropriate glass pieces for this design. Coloured glass pieces in shades of yellow, orange and green are arranged to portray daffodils in full bloom, among greenery in front of a sunny background. The expertly made illustration is eye-catching and can easily be recognised as one of the Tiffany Studios creations. The colours of the lampshade come alive once the light is switched on. The vivid lampshade stands on a patinated bronze stem of a slender form terminating in a larger round base. The top and bottom of the stand are cast with flowing and elongated s-shaped forms, larger on the base and smaller on the top. Such organic forms are synonymous with the Art Nouveau style popular during the early 20th century. Maker’s mark reading ‘TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1449’ are impressed in the leading on the lampshade and another one reading ‘TIFFANY STUDIOS / NEW YORK / 584’ is stamped on the underside of the stand. Hand-made in Tiffany Studio’s premises in Queens, New York, this table lamp would form a fantastic addition to one’s collection of important early 20th-century decorative and functional objects.

Tiffany Studios New York "Apple Blossom" Table Lamp
By Tiffany Studios
Located in New York, NY
A Tiffany Studios New York "Apple Blossom" glass and bronze table lamp. The shade features amber & green streaky glass branches with pink and white apple blossoms. The tonality of the leaves ranges from dense, deep greens at the crown to lighter greens below. The apple blossoms range from white at the shade's irregular border to pink with touches of red towards the crown. Tiffany's artisans skillfully incorporated specialized types of glass into the lampshade, specifically using foliage and granite glass. The unique texture of these glass varieties gives rise to a captivating interaction between degrees of translucency and opacity, evoking the dappled effect of sunlight filtering through tree branches. The shade sits atop a patinated bronze tree trunk base and is specially designed to fit it. The patinated bronze openwork crown lattice at the top of the shade resembles tree branches and is a direct extension of the base. Flowering apple trees grew on the grounds of his Laurelton Hall estate and appear as a motif in many of his windows and lamps. The spreading “Apple Blossom” lamp is the most stunning and realistic tree shape that Tiffany ever produced. Its intricacy and delicacy imbue the piece with radiant beauty and give it marked significance within the world of Tiffany lamps. In 1875, Tiffany photographed his wife Mary Goddard Tiffany and daughter Mae Mae picking apple blossoms on the grounds of his father Charles’ eighteenth century Dutch farmhouse in Irvington, NY. As a matter of both aesthetic and sentimental significance, Tiffany lined...
