Amazing! The ULTIMATE Rocket Ship Lamp! Mid Century Hand Carved Mahogany Rocket Ship Table Lamp Hand-painted Fiberglass Shade 1953 This is the finest and most impressive rocket ship lamp in the world! The simple design harks back to the V2 rocket era! In the postwar period people were inundated abut the new coming "space age" and that rockets would be the most magnificent thing since sliced bread! Mail would be delivered by rockets, people would be living on the moon and in space stations! And rockets would take them there! This environment gave birth to this beautiful, hand-crafted rocket lamp that has a simple purity and immense presence that can't be beat. It's a 30" tall monument to the space age! The simplicity of design is complemented by the finest choice of rich mahogany wood, creating a masterpiece of mid century design! Crowned with a hand painted, now opaque, fiberglass shade, the creator clearly wanted to control how the light hits the rocket body. In marvelous vintage condition! The original wood chosen has seams which were filled up and lacquered to be used as part of the design. V2 rockets, which clearly inspired this piece, had distinctively painted lines and rectangles which were often reproduced in all period drawings of rockets. Original wiring and socket work well. Fiberglass shade was painted a glorious 1950's pale mint color that is both flattering and distinctive. Shade and paint show age wear after 70 years, but far less than one would expect. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the collector of Mid Century Modern lighting or for the decorator who wants to provide something truly "special" for the right client! A celestial beauty of a lamp for your NY penthouse, Palm Springs atomic ranch or West Palm Beach estate!
