About the Item
Impressive and tall ceramic table lamp made by Robert Perot, stamped on the back with his manufacture name "VIEUX MOULIN VALLAURIS".
In his early years Robert Perot worked on the restauration of the Reims cathedral, this influence is clear when we see how the main decor of this lamp reminds us of the stained glass frame we can find on such monuments.
ROBERT PÉROT (1931-2003)
Robert Pérot is a ceramist and a sculptor from the golden age of ceramics in Vallauris who pursued his studies at the School of fine Arts in Reims from 1946 to 1949, specializing in sculpture. During this period, he encountered influential figures such as Jean-Claude Malarmey and Dominique Baudart.
While working with stone, the young artist contributed to the restoration of the Reims Cathedral. Gifted with a talent for drawing, he further honed his skills in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Following his Parisian studies, he assumed the role of the molding workshop at the Champagne-Provence pottery atelier near Reims. In 1953, Robert Pérot returned to his hometown, Vallauris, joining Jean Rivier’s workshop. That same year, he participated in the exhibition organized by the union of Plastic Arts for Peace (Union des Arts Plastiques pour la Paix), where Picasso was featured.
By 1954, he decided to acquire an old olive mill in Vallauris, known for his pottery tradition. Renaming the mill, “Vieux Moulin”, he transformed it into a ceramic workshop and a shop where he sold his ceramic creations.
Pérot’s ceramics creations are often include elaborately crafted table lamps and cylindrical vases adorned with stylized geometric abstract designs in earthy hues.
His work has been exhibited in France and is part of prestigious public and private collections across Europe. In 1962, he won the first price at the pottery exhibition of Albissola, Italy.
