About the Item

Designed in the 1950s by James Mont, this mid century Tara Buddha bust vintage table lamp is a true statement piece for your eclectic or mid century home's decor. It is a ceramic plaster lamp made in the likeness of Tara, a Chinese goddess of mercy. Tara: A Powerful Feminine Force. Tara, in Buddhism, is a compassionate goddess and female Buddha who protects beings from danger, offers guidance, and helps in the path to enlightenment. She is particularly revered in Tibetan Buddhism, where she is seen as the feminine counterpart to the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Tara has many forms, most notably Green Tara and White Tara, each with unique spiritual attributes. She is a powerful force for spiritual liberation and nurturing, embodying universal love and wisdom. James Mont (born Demetrios Pecintoglu, 1904-1978) was a notorious mid-century designer and interior decorator known for his exotic, luxury-filled, and often Chinese-inspired pieces. His career, which began at a Brooklyn electrical shop and was propelled by early mob connections, spanned the 1930s to the 1960s. Mont's distinctive style, blending Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, and Midcentury Modern elements, made him a favored designer for both gangsters and Hollywood celebrities. • Exotic and Chinoiserie: Mont's work is heavily influenced by Asian aesthetics, particularly Chinoiserie, creating an "Oriental" aura in his pieces. ® • Mixed Styles: His designs combine elements of Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, and Midcentury Modernism. • Masterful Craftsmanship: He was an obsessive perfectionist, known for his intricate lacquer work, detailed metal leaf, and meticulous attention to detail in incorporating classical and Eastern elements into modern forms.
