Charles Schneider, born February 23, 1881 in Château-Thierry and died January 7, 1953 in Épinay-sur-Seine (Seine), was a French master glassmaker of the Art Deco period, a student of Jean Daum in Nancy, and founder of the art glass brand Le Verre français, with his brother Ernest Schneider (1877-1937). They founded their own company, Verreries Schneider, in Épinay-sur-Seine in 1913. The company's success continued after the end of hostilities in 1918. It had up to 500 employees by 1925 and sold its creations worldwide.
The company produced under two brands: Le Verre français and the Schneider line. The former was more accessible, offering 17 color variations compared to Schneider's 32. It caused a sensation with its "butterfly" design, created around 1925, depicting red and blue insects on an azure cloudy background. It used complex techniques such as bubble glass. Some productions were signed "Charder," an abbreviation for Charles Schneider.
The unique and judicious combination of shapes, new and diverse colors (yellow, mauve, tango orange), and designs make this artist's creations exceptional pieces, highly sought after today. The brand's signature dishes and black-footed bowls are the result of the company's reputation. Colored glass powders melted between two or more layers of clear glass allowed for an infinite variety of colorful designs.

WMF was originally called Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer. In 1880, Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer merged with another German company and took the name of Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, then WMF acquired the Polish metalworks Plewkiewicz of Warsaw in 1886, which became a subsidiary of WMF around 1900. In 1900, WMF acquired Albert Köhler, a famous Austrian ironwork company. Then, in 1905, WMF acquired Orivit, a company known for its Jugendstil (German equivalent of Art Nouveau) pewter fabrications, followed a year later by the purchase of Kunstgewerbliche Metallwarenfabrik Orion, another German metal fabrication company. .
During World War I, the WMF was responsible for producing weapons for the German military and had certified to the Allied Control Commission that the tools used to produce these weapons had been destroyed. However, after Hitler's call for rearmament, the company, then under the control of Hugo Debach, immediately resumed producing weapons. Debach died shortly thereafter. From 1940, WMF began to make increasing use of forced labor from Soviet POWs in surrounding camps, with these eventually accounting for a third of the company's workforce. The WMF also founded its own concentration camp in 1944 to detain and force over 900 Hungarian Jewish women...
