Lotus Series Flora Gouda Table Lamp, 1977, New Liberty London Shade

About the Item

Exquisitely handcrafted by Amitābha Studio in Amsterdam from a rare vintage Flora Gouda vase produced during the short-lived Lotus series in 1977, Lotus is a one-of-a-kind table lamp. The deep indigo vase features a rhythmic band of ivory-toned abstract motifs, all hand-painted in expressive freehand strokes—a testament to the waning years of Flora’s artisanal production before the factory transitioned to industrial methods. We’ve paired the base with a bespoke lampshade made from Liberty Fabric’s limited-edition Marquess Garden Chesham Sateen in Lapis, a richly detailed floral textile that echoes the vase’s Delft-inspired tones. The lamp was created without harming the original vase in any way. The Lotus series holds particular significance within Dutch ceramic history. Introduced at the very end of Plateelbakkerij Flora’s golden era, each piece from this 1977 collection is subtly unique and brimming with the modernist spirit that defined the period. The striking blue glaze—often admired for its velvety depth—serves as a dramatic canvas for the decorative band that rings the upper portion of the vase. This visual rhythm feels both timeless and distinctly of its moment, representing a final flourish of craftsmanship before the company merged into Royal Goedewaagen in the 1990s. The lampshade, crafted in an atelier just outside Amsterdam, draws from a revived 1977 Liberty print that channels the Arts and Crafts movement through a contemporary lens. Its dense, intricate floral pattern in cool blues and whites acts as both complement and counterpoint to the graphic simplicity of the vase. Together, these two elements—conceived independently in the same year—form a dialogue between Dutch ceramic artistry and British textile heritage. A custom-cut brass collar adds a refined finishing touch, while a matching blue cord echoes the lamp’s saturated palette. This lamp is equally suited to refined eclectic interiors, serene bedrooms, or richly layered living spaces where vintage and contemporary design intersect. We also ensure compatibility for global use by offering a free plug customization service to match the electrical standards of your specific country. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. ⸻ Please note: The lamp is fully wired for use in the U.S. Additionally, the listed height includes the lampshade. We also ensure compatibility for global use by offering a free plug customization service to match the electrical standards of your specific country. Known for bold glazes and innovative decor, Flora remained committed to hand-painted traditions well into the 1970s. The Lotus series, introduced briefly in 1977, is considered one of the company’s final artisanal achievements — combining modernist abstraction with the Dutch legacy of floral ornamentation. Each piece in the series was painted by hand, making no two exactly alike. By the 1990s, Flora had merged into Royal Goedewaagen, and the Lotus line now holds a special place as a collectible snapshot of Dutch ceramic history at a turning point in style and production.
