Marius-Ernest Sabino French Art Deco Table Lamp and Garniture Set, Signed

About the Item

Fine French Art Deco Table Lamp by Marius Ernest Sabino (1878–1961), with Breccia Marble Garniture Set This exceptional French Art Deco table lamp is crafted by the renowned artist Marius Ernest Sabino (1878-1961), featuring opalescent glass with an intricate floral motif, elegantly supported by two finely detailed figurines playing musical instruments. One of the figurines is stamped, adding authenticity and value to the piece. The lamp’s base is made from stepped breccia marble, enhancing its elegant Art Deco style. The opalescent glass shade is signed "Sabino," a hallmark of the artist's expertise in glassmaking. Complementing the lamp is a garniture set consisting of two finely crafted marble candelabras, made from the same exquisite breccia marble as the lamp’s base, creating a harmonious, unified aesthetic. Marius Sabino was a prominent figure in the world of glass design, and the founder of the renowned Sabino Glass company. Born in Sicily in 1878, he moved to France as a child, where he studied at the prestigious L'École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs and the Beaux-Arts de Paris. His early interest in the potential of electricity on glass design led him to develop a unique approach to lighting. After serving as a volunteer during World War I, Sabino shifted his factory's focus from traditional wood or bronze light fittings to innovative glass designs. In 1925, Sabino introduced his signature opalescent glass, featuring a blue hue and iridescent patterns reminiscent of clouds in a blue sky, reflections on water, or the glow of a soap bubble. His work extended to notable commissions, such as the creation of special lighting for the luxury cruise ship Île-de-France in 1927 and a lighted fountain column for the Grand Salon of Normandie in 1935. Sabino's factory remains in France to this day, with its molds considered cultural heritage and protected from leaving the country. It’s important to note that the original white pressed glass shades, such as those found in this lamp, are no longer reproduced, ensuring that pieces like this remain highly sought after as authentic Marius Sabino works.
