Lamp said to Carcel system mounted on China vase in Canton XIXth century. Bronze frame. This Carcel mechanism bears the name of its inventor Guillaume Carcel who, in 1800, developed his oil lamp (of rapeseed, for example) comprising a suction-repressing pump driven by a clockwork motor, which ensured the constant supply of the wick. The tank is no longer on the side: it is now under the burner. This floor lamp has a cylindrical wick burner and a movable glass holder to adjust the flame. The glass-chimney is throttled at the level of the flame. The Carcel lamp, deemed expensive and fragile, was reserved for a wealthy clientele. His widow and his son-in-law Mr. Zier, still held in 1821, the workshops and the shop at 8 rue de l'Arbre-Sec in Paris.
