About the Item

Antique Meiji Period Kyoto Satsuma Vase Table Lamp, Japan, circa 1880 Dimensions: – Height without lamp fitting: 21.7 cm – Height with lamp fitting: 27.5 cm – Height with lampshade: 42 cm A rare and finely crafted example of Meiji-period Kyoto Satsuma ware, this piece dates to around 1880 and was thoughtfully converted into a table lamp in the late 19th century. Originally conceived as a decorative or ceremonial vase, the form is modeled after a tied cloth sack—an uncommon and sculptural silhouette in Japanese earthenware. The surface is adorned with a golden, raised relief cord draped around the neck, adding sculptural depth. The body features meticulous hand-painted decoration depicting nine sages or Lohan (Rakan) figures traversing a mountainous landscape—a motif rich with spiritual symbolism and reflective of Buddhist traditions in Japanese art. The conversion to a lamp preserves the vase’s artistic integrity, allowing its fine craftsmanship and narrative detail to remain the focal point. This is a distinctive example of Kyoto Satsuma pottery, merging the spiritual storytelling of the Meiji era with functional design. Origin: Japan Period: Meiji (circa 1880) Maker: Unknown, Kyoto Satsuma School LAMPSHADE The lampshades shown in the images is not included but may be available on request.
