About the Item
- A beautiful set of lighting instruments encompassing a mini task lamp and magnifying lens by renowned manufacturers and optician 'A. Franks of Manchester', England circa 1880.
- Each of the lamps feature exquisite metalwork and encompass handmade tongue and groove wooden boxes with a sliding compartment to the underneath.
- The magnifying instrument has its original makers mark stamped in metal 'A. FRANKS Manufacturing Optician Manchester Est 1798'.
- Both of the lamps have been intricately restored and run of a single battery pack which sits inside the wooden box, wonderful original pieces.
- Magnifying Lamp: Height 16cm, Width 12cm, Depth 10cm.
- Mini Task Lamp: Height 26cm, Width 14cm, Depth 10cm.
- Price is for the set, the lay figure seen in the photographs is also for sale and within a separate listing.
A. Franks Ltd was an optician and instrument maker which traded between 1879 and 1950. Founded in the latter part of the 19th century by Louis Aubrey Franks, they traded originally as 'L.A. Franks' from Manchester, listed as a manufacturer of photographic apparatus, optician and scientific instrument maker. Following a bankruptcy in 1879, a new firm was formed soon after, an optician trading as A. Franks.

Industrial Dugdills Desk Lamp
A scarce early Dugdills lamp reclaimed from a military installation. The lamp is in original condition retaining its white enamel shade and steel arms with their original cream paint. This is a rare model of Dugdills lamps produced.
Dugdills were one of the early manufacturers of industrial lighting. The company was founded in the 1930s by John Dugdill a prolific British inventor who filed a succession of technical patents in both Britain and the US before 1939. This desk lamp with its articulating joints has the rarer cog tensioners and would have been issued for use in the Royal Navy retaining its AP9103A Admiralty Patent number.
