Pair of Chinese Famille Vert Porcelain & French Ormolu Mounted Candelabra Lamps
About the Item
A Magnificent Pair of 19th Century French Ormolu-Mounted Chinese Export Porcelain Candelabra Lamps with Famille Vert Enamel Flower Decoration. Each vase is of baluster form with a domed cover, surmounted by a gilt bronze finial in the shape of a pomegranate with attached leaves. The porcelain bodies are decorated with vertical panels containing polychrome floral motifs in shades of green, red, and yellow on white ground, outlined by thin red borders. The covers have matching decoration. The gilt bronze mounts consist of four foliate branches extending outward from the lower body of each vase, with each branch terminating in a bud-like form. These branches are attached to a ribbon-tied gilt bronze band encircling the lower section of the vases. The bases are square and made of gilt bronze, with a raised relief border resembling a twisted rope pattern. Each lamp is fitted with a central gilt bronze stem extending vertically from the finial, supporting a two-light fixture with pull-chain switches. The sockets are positioned horizontally on either side of the stem.
Although these pieces do not appear to be signed (we have not examined the underside of the bronzes and they have a good chance of having signatures underneath) The Fabulous quality of the chasing on the ormolu and Golding could easily be attributed to one of the Master French Designers or Bronziers: Henry Dasson or Beurdeley. These candelabras can easily be converted back from lamps to original candelabras.
