About the Item

A stunning pair of Chinese vases repurposed as lamps dating from the 1960s. Each vase features a vibrant yellow enamel ground beautifully layered over classic blue and white underglaze decoration, creating a harmonious blend of traditional and bold color contrasts. The vases are elegantly accented with lacquered and brass mounts, complemented by matching brass finials, adding a refined touch of craftsmanship and style. Blue and white porcelain holds a revered place in Chinese ceramic history, originating during the Tang Dynasty and reaching its pinnacle in the Ming Dynasty (14th–17th centuries). The iconic cobalt blue pigment, often imported from Persia, was applied under a clear glaze to create vivid designs that have fascinated collectors worldwide for centuries. Enamel decoration on Chinese porcelain, known as "famille jaune" when featuring yellow grounds, emerged later during the Qing Dynasty as part of the famille rose and famille verte palettes. Enameling techniques allowed for a broader color range and intricate surface decoration, adding a luxurious and vibrant dimension to traditional blue-and-white motifs. These vases beautifully combine two historic Chinese decorative arts traditions, making them not only functional lamps but also enduring symbols of China's rich artistic heritage.
