About the Item

Fresh from a distinguished Chicago estate, this exceptional pair of woven pottery lamps is attributed to the visionary American architect and interior designer Samuel Marx, dating to circa 1950. The bases showcase amazing craftsmanship, skillfully crafted to mimic the texture and appearance of woven wicker baskets—a testament to the innovative artistry and material experimentation characteristic of mid-century design. Samuel Marx was a seminal figure in American design, renowned for his pioneering synthesis of modernist principles with historical and cultural influences. His work was groundbreaking for its sophisticated use of texture, form, and materials, which helped define a uniquely American modernism. Marx’s interiors and objects were both elegant and forward-thinking, influencing generations of designers who followed. These lamps, predating the more widely known 1975 plaster lamps designed by John Dickinson, exemplify Marx’s early exploration of textural illusion and sculptural form, marking them as significant artifacts in the evolution of mid-century decorative arts. Due to their delicate construction and intricate detail, these lamps require shipping via white glove service to ensure their protection and preservation.
