About the Item

Pair of rare "Galatea" table lamps with female figures in cast bronze on patinated bronze bases by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1970's (signed “PK LaVerne” on front of one base). The female figures are based on the myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who creates an ivory alabaster statue representing his ideal woman and then falls in love with her, which he names Galatea; the goddess Venus answers his prayers and brings her to life. The pair have been newly rewired by Lobel Modern with new bronze sockets and silk cords. Lighting fittings have been professionally polished and lacquered. Provenance: From the Collection of Kelvin LaVerne Reference: ALCHEMY: THE ART OF PHILIP AND KELVIN LAVERNE written by Evan Lobel with Kelvin LaVerne, published by Pointed Leaf Press in 2024, these lamps are shown on pages 170-171 in the section titled The Cast Series. The caption reads, “The 1970s GALATEA lamps include cast patinated bronze figures on patinated bronze bases. The beautiful curves of the bases complement the cast female figures perfectly. The LaVernes did several works about the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea.” Dimensions for each as shown: W: 15 inches D: 10 inches H: 25.5 inches (Adjustable to 29.5 inches) Shade W: 16 inches Shade D: 10 inches Shade H: 10 inches

Philip & Kelvin Laverne Rare and Important Torso Table Lamps 1970s - Signed
By Philip and Kelvin LaVerne
Located in New York, NY
Rare and important “Male and Female Torso” table lamps in Hydro Stone plaster on patinated bronze bases by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1970's (signed "PK LaVerne" on both bases).  These table lamps have been finished with a patina that makes them look like excavated sculptures and are very impressive.  As many of the LaVerne's pieces reference historical civilizations, these reference ancient Greek and Roman sculptures.  New custom shades provided by Lobel Modern. These have been newly rewired with new bronze sockets and silk cord. There is a switch on the back of each lamp which turns both sockets on and off at the same time. Reference: ALCHEMY: THE ART OF PHILIP AND KELVIN LAVERNE written by Evan Lobel with Kelvin LaVerne, published by Pointed Leaf Press in 2024, these lamps are shown on pages 231 in the section titled Other Materials . The caption reads, “MALE AND FEMALE TORSO table lamps...
