Signed Pair Daum Sculptural Table Lamps Blue Clear Crystal Glass France 1970s

About the Item

Rare pair of high quality and high end French table lamps signed Daum France around 1970s. The heavy midcentury lamp bases are made of clear crystal glass combined with ocean blue tinted glass with an abstract brutalist style decor. The lamps come with their original white to off-white fabric shades with blue rim lines which is very rare. They measure 59 cm / 23.23 inches tall including shade, the shades are 41 cm / 16.14 inches wide, and 17 cm / 6.69 inches deep, the lamp base is 19,5 cm / 7.68 inches wide, 7 cm / 2.76 inches deep and 33 cm / 12.99 inches tall including fitting. Each table lamp has one original grey plastic fitting for one E27 standard screw bulb to illuminate. Wiring and switch are perfect so everything is fine working and ready to use. Signed to the front DAUM France and each additionally with paper label to the bottom of the base, see detailed pictures. The rare beauties which stay in very good to excellent original condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, are statement pieces, eye-catchers and highlights for every room. For collectors, Daum is a name in the first rank of the French makers of art glass, along with those of Émile Gallé and René Lalique. Led in its early decades by the brothers Auguste (1853–1909) and Antonin Daum (1864–1931), the company, based in the city of Nancy, established its reputation in the Art Nouveau period, and later successfully adopted the Art Deco style. Daum (French, est. 1878) is a crystal and glass studio based in Nancy, France. Founded in 1878 by notary and industrialist Jean Daum, the studio was later taken over by his sons Auguste and Antonin, who ran the company during the Art Nouveau era. It wasn’t until the Universal Exhibition of 1900 that the company emerged as a major force on the decorative art scene, with Daum receiving the prestigious Grand Prix medal. During this time, Daum glass became more elaborate, acid etching was often combined with carving, enameling, and engraving on a single piece of glass to produce creative glass masterpieces. Other features of Daum pieces included applied glass elements, such as handles and ornamental motifs, in naturalistic forms. The Daum brothers quickly became important figures in the Art Nouveau movement, rivalling noted designer Émile Gallé, and becoming leaders in the field of decorative glass following his death. In 1906, Daum revived pâte de verre (glass casting), a process in which glass is made into a paste, applied to the surface of a mold, then fired. The technique has its roots in ancient Egypt. Today, Daum is the only commercial crystal manufacturer that uses the pâte de verre process for its glass objects and crystal sculptures. Following World War I, Paul Daum began developing works in the Art Deco style, moving away from an emphasis on naturalistic forms and toward linear, angular shapes, streamlined forms, and geometric patterns that characterized the movement. After the Second World War, Henri and Michel Daum focused on the transparency of the glass and clean lines. Daum has since collaborated with a number of notable artists, including Louis Majorelle, Salvador Dalí, Hilton Mac Connico, Elizabeth Garouste, and Mattia Bonetti in the creation of pâte de verre objects.
