About the Item

Beautiful Danish midcentury handmade and hand-decorated ceramic table lamp by designer and artistic director Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son. Manufactured on the Danish island of Bornholm in the 1960s. Light grey crackle glaze (persia glaze) with a rosy tint and deep blue hand decorated big organic flowers on the belly. Rewired and in beautiful vintage condition. Denmark, 1960s. Persia glaze was created by Michael Andersen's son, Daniel Andersen, and awarded a Gold Medal at the World's Fair in Brussels in 1935. Marianne Starck (1937-2001) worked as the artistic director at Michael Andersen & Son on the Danish island of Bornholm from 1955 to the company's closure in 1993. During these decades her output of designs was vast and not very well cataloged. One of her most striking and popular series was for the Tribal series - also known as the Negro series. The motifs vary from abstract forms and geometric patterns to stylized animals and humans. Her work clearly reflects that she studied as a graphic designer in Hamburg, Germany, before she took her artistry to the ceramic scene in midcentury Denmark.
