Superb Pair of French Late 19th-Century Marble & Ormolu Urns Converted to Lamps, Neoclassical A magnificent pair of original late 19th-century French neoclassical urns, masterfully carved in richly veined marble and mounted with finely chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, later converted to table lamps. The urns exhibit classical form with scrolled twin handles, laurel wreath supports, and garlanded floral swags — all motifs emblematic of the Louis XVI and Empire revival styles so celebrated during the Belle Époque. Originally conceived as purely decorative urns for a grand salon or hôtel particulier, these vessels were sympathetically adapted to electric table lamps, preserving their sculptural beauty while enhancing their function. The conversion was carefully executed with no damage to the original forms and retains the integrity of the decorative composition. The marble is a dramatic grey-and-white breccia, likely sourced from the Alps or southern France, prized for its complex veining and subtle coloration. Each ormolu mount is crisply cast and gilded with refined neoclassical taste, seated on square plinth bases with foliate and ribbon motifs. These lamps offer remarkable presence and provenance — equally at home in traditional settings or juxtaposed with modern interiors for a sophisticated contrast.
