About the Item
An evocative piece of mid-century Italian ceramic design, this turquoise-glazed table lamp by Ugo Zaccagnini reflects the East-meets-West aesthetic that gained prominence in the 1950s.
Handcrafted in Florence, the lamp draws on Asian style decorative motifs, with a stylised cartouche wrapping the rotund ceramic body, flanked by classic Greek key borders and other ornate relief elements—all highlighted in gold gilt.
The intense turquoise glaze, a hallmark of Zaccagnini’s more exuberant post-war work, creates a vivid contrast against the warmth of the gold detailing. The result is both glamorous and sculptural, capturing the mid-century fascination with exoticism and surface richness.
Measuring 38 cm in height and 12 cm in width, the lamp has been lightly restored: the gilt decoration has received a minor professional touch-up, and a polished brass neck and gold-toned Edison lamp holder have been sympathetically added to complement the original design. The ceramic base is hand-signed and numbered to the underside.
In good vintage condition, showing only minor age-related wear. Wiring is not tested and should be certified according to local safety standards before use.

Studio Pottery Terracotta Lamp Base by Graeme James, Chipping Campden c. 1980s
Located in Glasgow, GB
A distinctive example of British studio pottery lighting from the 1980s, this handmade ceramic table lamp was crafted by Graeme James in his Chipping Campden workshop.
The base combines terracotta and stoneware, executed using the traditional wax resist technique—a process where wax is applied by hand before glazing. As the glaze resists the waxed areas during firing, it reveals expressive brushstrokes and exposes the raw terracotta beneath, producing a multi-layered, highly tactile surface.
