About the Item

Introducing a glazed ceramic table lamp adorned with beige and brown patterns. It features a contemporary lampshade and is marked at the base with the handwritten provenance "Vallauris," the renowned village in southern France where many mid-century masters, including Capron and Bessone, created their iconic works. Topped with a modern lampshade. Dimensions with the shades: Ø35 H77cm. Marcel Giraud (1927–?) Marcel Giraud was a distinguished ceramist from Vallauris, France, known for his contributions to the region’s rich pottery tradition. Born in 1927, he began his journey in ceramics at the age of 13, undertaking a four-year apprenticeship as a potter’s wheel turner under Blaise Rubino. Eager to deepen his knowledge, he later worked with Tiola, a company specializing in traditional wood-fired kilns, from 1944 to 1946. Between 1956 and 1960, Giraud collaborated with several ceramists in Vallauris, refining his techniques and artistic vision. In 1960, he established his own studio on rue François Donnet, where he focused on creating both decorative and functional ceramics, blending craftsmanship with artistic expression. In 1975, Giraud returned to his family home in the Mauruches district of Vallauris. There, he expanded his artistic pursuits, delving into painting as well as stone and metal sculpture. By 1991, he had developed a distinctive style that fused traditional wheel-throwing techniques with sculptural elements, further elevating his work. Celebrated for his unique decorative motifs and refined forms, Giraud’s creations range from ceramic pitchers to lamps and other functional pieces, remaining highly sought after by collectors of mid-century ceramics. His dedication to craftsmanship and innovation left a lasting mark on the ceramic arts of Vallauris.
