About the Item

A mid-century American Art Decó style table lamp with sphere by Walter von Nessen. The lamp's body has a sphere on its top, an inverted con and a round base. The socket has its original Nessen Lighting sticker. 61 x 14.5 cm. Ø (lamp). 61 x 34 cm. Ø (with screen). Walter von Nessen (1889 - 1943) is a German-born American designer who excelled with his Streamline Art Decó lamps and decorative objects. Born in Berlin, he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule under Bruno Paul and worked after World War I with Peter Behrens. He first moved to Stockholm and by 1927, he had moved to New York. He founded Nessen Studios in Manhattan, where he became the United States' innovator of lamps design with his clean simple lines and shiny materials. His designs were popular thanks to the novelty of electric light between the population, the boom of skycrappers and the growth of the American cities during the Roaring Twenties.
