About the Item

Unique ceramic table lamp with glossy, buttery yellow crackle glaze body and forest green and brown abstract Asian-inspired relief motifs was made in Italy by Società Anonima Ceramiche Zaccagnini for the Marbro Lamp Company. The ceramic body sits on original carved wooden base; original brass fittings and finial complement the vibrant color palette. Marbro Lamp Company operated in Los Angeles, California, from mid-1940s to late 1980s. The company was supplying interior designers, upscale furniture stores, and Hollywood celebrities. Marbro lamps were usually made to order, which made them unique; the company was importing the components that made up the lamp bodies in small quantities, and wood bases and metal parts were made to order per a customer’s specifications by skilled artisans in the workshop. This particular lamp base was made as a part of a series; the bases had the same relief design, but with slight variations in bands placements and different base glaze colors (various online listings and catalogues show lamps with cream, yellow crackle, and red crackle base glaze variations). Many of those bases are not signed, some are signed with capital “Z” with a squiggly line through it and word Italy, Zaccagnini logo that was used from 1937 to 1958, and word Marbro, and some are signed with Marbro Italy in the same script. It allows to date the lamp base series to late 1940s to 1950s. The lamp stands 37.25" tall to the top of the final with ceramic body measuring 19.25" high. It is marked with Marbro company sticker on the brass fittings, paper sticker "Base Made in Italy" inside the lamp base, and handwritten "Marbro Lamp Italy" with model number inside the lamp base (last two marks are visible when the wooden base is removed). It is in good vintage condition with minor glaze loss on the rim; wide relief has slight manufacturer's glaze defects that are consistent with overall crackle effect on background glaze.

Table Lamp by Ugo Zaccagnini
By Ugo Zaccagnini
Located in Kilmarnock, VA
A beautifully proportioned and sculptural table lamp by Ugo Zaccagnini, featuring a soft robin’s egg blue crackled glaze with subtle tonal variation and surface depth. The gentle craquelure enhances the organic curves of the ceramic body, lending the lamp a tactile quality and a sense of quiet movement. The original rosewood cap and base provide a rich material contrast—dark, refined, and architectural against the delicate surface of the glaze. This interplay of texture and tone reflects the studio’s deep sensitivity to form and finish. Zaccagnini, one of Italy’s most respected 20th-century ceramicists, worked at the intersection of tradition and modernity. Known for his sculptural forms and refined glazes, his work was widely exhibited and retailed through top galleries and luxury decorators in postwar Europe and the United States. This lamp’s silhouette is bold yet fluid—equally at home in a richly layered interior or a clean-lined, organic modernist space. The cool, pale blue makes it a versatile design element: it can act as a subtle pop of color in a neutral room, or as a cool, calming contrast against deeper hues and dark woods. Designers such as Gio Ponti, Billy Baldwin, or Kalef Alaton...
