Fine French Transition Louis XV XVI Style Chest Sideboard
Located in Forney, TX
A stunning, rare, and very fine quality French Transitional Louis XV - Louis XVI style mahogany inlaid marble-top chest after Jean-François Oeben / Jean-Henri Riesener. Exquisitely hand-crafted in France, born in the late 19th / early 20th century, exceptionally executed Parisian work, retaining the original shaped marble top with contoured molded edge, over conforming solid mahogany case extensively inlaid with rich floral decoration and geometric trompe l'oeil marquetry-work. Embellished with finely sculpted and chisled gilt bronze ormolu mounts, the case fitted with three high quality locking bar mounted cabinet doors, each adorned with matched ornate escutcheon and opening thanks to the original keys, revealing a mahogany finished interior with single shelf. Featuring rare and exotic woods inlaid, all rising on bronze mounted transitional cabriole legs, ending in the finest quality patinated bronze sabots. Its three doors do not interfere with its delicate marquetry with decorations of geometric cubes and beautiful flowers on gilt gold ground, its two flat uprights with cut sides inviting finesse and harmony, while its bronzes, with antique motifs indicate the return to refined classic taste. A fine example of the Transition style, this chest subtly combines Louis XV marquetry with shapes that are already more rectilinear. From the middle of the 18th century, certain French artists, at the head of which the architects Blondel and Contant d'Ivry as well as the painter Louis-Joseph Le Lorrain, rose up against the excesses of the rococo style and advocated a calming of lines by the use of classical or even ancient principles. If the "Greek" style was too categorical a response to these requests, the Transition style, soon launched by the Marquis de Marigny, brother of Madame de Pompadour and Minister of the Arts, was much more measured and appreciated. Dutch cabinetmaker Matthijs Horrix was also front and center, a leader a Transition style. Celebrated ebanista Jean-François Oeben was one of the leaders of this new taste, with Jean-Henri Riesener following in the 19th century. Oeben a genius with inlay, he gave birth to several patterns, both sober and elegant, such as the marquetry of bottomless cubes, which was adopted by many of his colleagues including Jacques Dautriche and Charles Chevallier. Jean-François Oeben was particularly known for his "Louis XV or Transition furniture, adorned with leaf veneers, flower inlays or geometric patterns", according to Pierre Kjellberg (Le Mobilier français du XVIIIe, éditions de l'Amateur, 1989). A small secretary in the Transition cabinet...

French Louis XV Style Ormolu & Parquetry Guéridon End Table by François Linke
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A Fine French 19th-20th Century Louis XVI Style Mahogany, Tulipwood and Gilt-Bronze (Ormolu) Mounted Belle Époque Guéridon Circular Side-Table with a Parquetry Top, by François Linke (1855-1946). The single-drawer end table inset with a symmetrical parquetry top an ormolu frieze, the apron with bow-tied swagged floral wreaths, the corners with fruit and acorns ormolu mounts, raised on four tapered legs topped with chased rings and inset spigots, all raised on bell-shaped sabots. Signed on top trim: F. Linke. Circa: Paris, 1890-1900. François Linke (1855-1946) was one of the most celebrated ébénistes of his time. Born in Pankraz, Bohemia, Linke moved to Paris in 1875 and six years later established independent ateliers at 170, rue de Faubourg St. Antoine. As was the practice among contemporaries and noteworthy predecessors, such as Alfred Beurdeley and Henry Dasson, Linke initially produced furniture derived from styles popular during the 18th century ancien régime. By 1900, his worldwide reputation as an individualistic master of high quality furniture was already established. However, with a huge display, placing his extravagant pieces in room settings and winning the Médaille d'Or for his Grand Bureau...

Mid-18th Century Louis XV Period Chest Of Drawers Commode Stamped LARDIN
Located in Forney, TX
An extraordinary Louis XV period (1715-1774) French ormolu mounted tulipwood and kingwood marquetry bombé sauteuse commode by master Parisian ébéniste André-Antoine Lardin. circa late 1740s In our 40+ years we have not came across a chest of drawers that captures our attention like this one! Exquisitely hand-crafted in Paris in the mid-18th century, exceptionally executed in opulent and luxurious period King Louis 15th taste, featuring a curvacious serpentine-front bombe-form solid wood case fitted with two drawers, adorned with finely chased, chiseled and gilded bronze doré mounts, including rare and most distinctive sculptural fiolated scroll Rocaille handles, flanking ornate keyhole escutcheons with original key included. In absolutely stunning rare and exotic precious tulipwood and kingwood veneer work with striking warm rich highly figured grain patterns, elegant floral marquetry inlays and fascinating early sunburst panels. The Breccia de Médous is extracted in the towns of Médous and Asté, near Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the Hautes-Pyrénées. This dramatic breccia is composed of angular elements of contrasting colors ranging from black to yellow to gray creating a bold but subdued visual display. Signed, retaining the original LARDIN blind stamp to top proper-right rear post underneath marble. André-Antoine Lardin (1724-1790) is a celebrated Master Cabinetmaker, earning maître in 1750, and particularly respected for his extraordinary woodworking veneer - marquetry work. - PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION: From the important collection of Loyd-Paxton, Dallas, Texas. Property from the magnificent Estate of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morris Graham Sr., El Paso, Texas, but also with homes in Dallas, Texas and Pebble Beach, California. Acquired from the highly reputable auction house Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas. 2024 Furniture & Decorative Art Featuring The Collection of Mrs. Henry Ford II Signature Auction Catalog #8167 Loyd Paxton Gallery, Dallas, Texas. With one of the finest collections in the world and prominent customers to match, including Sir Elton John, Truman Capote, Saudi Prince Faisal, and the Sultan of Brunei. Rare French antiques from Loyd-Paxton made their way into Versailles when it underwent renovations, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York purchased furnishings, including a dazzling Louis XIV Boulle desk that had been owned by the Sun King himself. Betty Jo Graham might not hold celebrity status but her remarkable life and many contributions to American history and the arts community of El Paso, Texas, make her deserving of the limelight nonetheless. Affectionately known to her friends as BJ, led a remarkable life that intertwined a deep passion for music with significant contributions to her community and country. BJ embarked on her vocal journey at the age of 12, studying under the esteemed Mini Ferguson Owens at the University of Wichita. Her pursuit of musical excellence continued in the same institution, where she later attended college. BJ's life was not solely dedicated to music; she also played a vital role in American history. During the tumultuous times of World War II, she contributed her skills to the Cessna AT-17 training program, a crucial effort in preparing pilots for combat. She worked as an electrical wiring diagram analyst for Boeing Engineering Development on the iconic Enola Gay project in 1956. BJ's heart always remained with music. She continued to refine her vocal skills with notable figures such as Maude Douglas Tweedy in New York City and John Charles Thomas in Apple Valley, California. Her love story with Robert Morris Graham Sr., whom she married in 1975, was filled with shared adventures and travels across the globe, living in places from Dallas, Texas, to Pebble Beach, California, and El Paso, Texas. As a trustee of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and a board member of the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra and El Paso Pro-Musica, she played a pivotal role in nurturing the musical landscape of her community. Her support extended to various causes, including the El Paso Opera, Holocaust Museum, Museum of Art, and many more, showcasing her belief in the transformative power of art and culture. Betty Jo Graham's journey through life reflects a profound dedication to her passions, community, and the arts. Her legacy, marked by her music, history, and philanthropy contributions, inspires and impacts many, ensuring that her melodious spirit will be remembered and cherished for future generations. After traveling the globe and living in cities across the country, Graham and her husband, Robert Morris Graham Sr., eventually settled in El Paso, where she served as a trustee of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and a board member of the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra and El Paso Pro-Musica. Though Graham had a lifelong passion for music and played a pivotal role in nurturing the musical landscape of her community, her philanthropy extended to various causes, including the El Paso Opera, El Paso Holocaust Museum and El Paso Museum of Art, showcasing her belief in the power of art and culture. A patron of the arts, Graham was also a collector of fine jewelry, with a particular fondness for eye-catching, statement-making rings, necklaces, earrings and more, and Heritage was honored to present Property from the Estate of Mrs. Betty Jo “B.J.” Graham as part of its Spring Fine Jewelry Signature Auction. Inscription to placard on reverse: FROM THE COLLECTION OF LOYD-PAXTON DALLAS, TEXAS Signatures: Original blind stamped LARDIN to top of rear post. Bronzes not removed to inspect for foundry marks. - DIMENSIONS: (approx) 33" High, 42" Wide, 20.75" Deep - CONDITION REPORT: Overall a superb example, especially considering its nearly 300 years old. Beautifully aged warm patina, antique wood glow and lustrous sheen. Strong, sturdy, stable, structurally sound. Evidence of restorations, likely by Loyd-Paxton, including high-quality bespoke upholstered drawer lining. Typical wear commensurate with age, use, handling and exposure, including minor nicks to edge, age splits scattered throughout body, expected antique character and charm. Marble top is in great shape. Accompanied by two working keys. Overall outstanding presence, delivered cleaned, waxed, with hand rubbed polished patina, ready for immediate use and generational enjoyment! - INTERESTING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This elegant commode typifies the fashion for furniture mounted with exotic and rare woods, exquisite marquetry-work, and decadent Rococo bronzes. Andre Antoine Lardin, also known as N.B. Lardin was born in 1724 and died on 10 August 1790. He held his master's title from 1 July 1750 and was particularly respected for the exceptional quality of his veneering / marquetry. A well known and regarded maître ébéniste, Lardin’s career is somewhat thinly documented, most likely due to the upheaval and record destruction during the Revolution, notably when the guilds in Paris and elsewhere were abolished in 1791. Lardin worked for various marchand-mercier (furniture dealers) and probably also for a private clientele. He ran his workshop first in the Rue de Charenton and from 1770 in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. His two sons, André Antoine II and Louis François, worked with him for some time and the second-named became his successor in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. Lardin is known to have worked for the marchands André-François Carré, this superb commode having almost most certainly been commissioned through the intervention of one of these fashionable dealers. The marchand-mercier André-François Carré, is recorded rue Froidmanteau, "Magasin de glaces, porcelaine ébénisterie et curiosités pour les cabinets d'histoire naturelle." Carré also worked with two vernisseurs (vernis Martin): Porchon and Prévost. All of Lardin's furniture is classic in form and decor, well crafted and mostly veneered in rosewoods or violet wood. Lardin worked in the taste of the time with geometric patterns, cartouche fields and simulated fluting. Furniture with elaborate inlays such as birds, trophies, urns, landscapes, or flowers and sunburts such as this stunning example appear more rarely. The stamp JME stands for Jures Menuisiers Ebeniste and notes the guild affiliation of the master. The Corporation des Menuisiers-Ébénistes was a French craft guild which was concerned with the profession of woodworking. Some JME stamps are worn down from the marble slab over the years and no longer apparent, but in this case lacking the JME stamp is likely indicative of work made prior to reaching maître ébéniste (master cabinetmaker), denoting an early and exceedingly scarce example. Eighteenth century French furniture...

The Linke Grand Regulator World's Fair Clock
Located in New Orleans, LA
Grand Regulator World's Fair Clock François Linke Circa 1900 Widely regarded as the greatest sculptural clock ever created, this monumental régulateur by François Linke was conceived as a statement for the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition, a moment when the world’s finest artisans competed on an international stage. Linke, the most celebrated ébéniste of the Belle Époque, was awarded the prestigious gold medal for his display, which critics described as “the biggest event in the history of furnishing art in the year 1900.” Designed in collaboration with the sculptor Léon Messagé, the clock exemplifies Linke’s ambition to elevate furniture and timepieces to the realm of fine art. The clock represents over a decade of design and craftsmanship. Only six examples of this model were ever completed due to the extraordinary labor and cost involved. Building just one had a production cost of 22,966 francs, the equivalent of approximately eight years' wages for the average French worker in 1900. The clock is illustrated on the spine of Christopher Payne’s definitive monograph on Linke. Mahdi Al-Tajir, one of the world’s most important collectors, later acquired the present model. Another is located at Whitehall, the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach. It was acquired by Rockefeller’s partner, Henry Flagler...

American Studio Craft Wall Mirror by Alan S. Kushner
Located in Hanover, MA
Custom woodwork decorative wall mirror created by artist Alan S. Kushner of Philadelphia circa 1990. Signed "AK" carved on back of bottom triangle. Overall dimensions: 72 inches high by 46 inches wide by 5 inches deep. Framed mirror dimensions: 46 inches high by 24 inches wide by 5 inches deep. Please note that the artist's intention was for the mirror to be displayed with the zebra wood arrow on the bottom pointing downward and the 'fishtail' on top. We know this because on the backside of the mirror are two wedge cut blocks for mounting in a corresponding wall bracket or Z clip. For the purposes of our photography it was not possible to stand the mirror on the point so all our photos show it upside down. Alan Kushner (1949-2008) was a self-taught woodworker and furniture maker who exhibited his designs primarily in and around Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland during the 1980's and 1990's. In 1991 he participated in the summer exhibition "In Our Circle" at the James Michener...

Large 19 Century French Rococo or Neoclassical Revival Style Vitrine
By David Roentgen
Located in Dallas, TX
Stunning 19th century French Empire, neoclassical/Rococo Revival style Marquetry vitrine or display cabinet, of large proportions!! A real statement piece! Made of a fabulous variety of veneers, including kingwood, satinwood, tulipwood, harewood and walnut with quality classical ormolu mounts. It has ebonized pillars in the Empire style, with walnut and exotic hardwood friezes in the Rococo style. Double glass doors to middle section and single glass doors on either side. The glass on the doors are framed in ormolu banding. Floral Marquetry panels on front and parquetry on the sides. The front central section is a pullout / pull-out drawers with gorgeous walnut frieze panel and original carved walnut knobs. Scrolling pelmet on the top in 3 sections banded in ormolu beading. Scrolling base with cabriolet feet and ormolu mounts on base. Various ormolu mounts, floral mounts, mounts of Baachus and mounts of neoclassical female figures. In 3 sections. with 2 side cabinets and large central section with 3 section pelmet, stunning piece!!! The quality ormolu mounts are marked with the letter “R” and what appears to be “FR 678”. We were originally of the belief that this piece might have been made at the very end of the 19th century, but having regard to the quality of workmanship throughout this piece we are of the opinion that it was most likely made in the third quarter of the 19th century, circa 1870 and by an obviously top quality Parisienne maker with a surname beginning with “R”. It is definitely in the style of David Roentgen who was known for his Rococo/neoclassical styles. David Roentgen, (born Aug. 11, 1743-died Feb. 12, 1807, Wiesbaden, Duchy of Nassau), cabinetmaker to Queen Marie-Antoinette of France; under his direction the family workshop at Neuwied (near Cologne), founded by his father, Abraham Roentgen, became perhaps the most-successful firm of furniture production in the 18th century. After succeeding his father as head of the Neuwied workshop in 1772, Roentgen strove to broaden their clientele, an ambition that brought him first to Hamburg and ultimately to Paris (1774), where in 1779 he was spectacularly successful in selling his finest furniture to King Louis XVI of France for £3,300 to £4,000, an unprecedented sum for the time. Appointed cabinetmaker to the queen, Roentgen was granted admission (1780) as maître-ébéniste (master cabinetmaker) to the trade corporation of Paris cabinetmakers, making it possible for him to keep in Paris a stock of the furniture manufactured at Neuwied. Thus he was able to compete with such great cabinetmakers as Jean-Henri Riesener and Adam Weisweiler, reputedly his former pupil at Neuwied.
