Pair of Georgian Carved "Stag" Giltwood Convex Mirrors, circa 1820

About the Item

These are from the Thomas Devenish Collection (documented below; see provenance). This pair of mirrors represents the transition period of rococo to neoclassical aesthetic which contains, among other elements, foliate ornamentation. The carved gilt wood "stag" mount resting on simulated natural stone is also typical of this period. Carved acorns and oak leaves adorn the crest and apron, while a reeded ebonized molding surrounds the convex mirror plate. The two scrolled candle arms are decorated with glass dish drip pan and faceted crystal drops. Side angle image used to show the accurate reflective properties without a distracting reflected background. Mirror plate glass is diffused on the straight ahead image. Convex mirrors (girandoles) employed the use of candle arms and candles which created optimum illumination, due to the multiplicity of reflective angles, as opposed to a flat plate looking glass. By the early part of the 19th century, they were a staple in the homes of the upper class, typically on each side of a fireplace. Great wall decoration for country home. Dimensions: 35" high x 24" wide x 5" deep. Provenance: Lot #172 Sotheby's New York April 24, 2008 "Tom Devenish: The Collection" Sale "Highy Important English Furniture".
