About the Item

Beautiful and rare, full length elliptical form dressing mirror by italian sculptor Lorenzo Burchiellaro dating from circa 1968- 1972. The mirror element is supported on a stunning organic sculptural form created in sand cast aluminum of great weight which bears Burchiellaro's incised hand signature (Please see image 3 for detail). The base features Burchiellaro's trademark incised marks and along with the organic marks resulting from the sand casting process add a complex irregular organic surface quality to an already complex organic form . We have left the aluminum surface unpolished with nice surface patina to maintain visual cues of genuine age and authenticity , the base could be polished to a shiny aluminum finish but we prefer to keep this work all original as it is an important work. The elliptical form mirror element is of extremely high quality and is half an inch thick , the rear surface of the mirror is lined with a beautiful, sculptural form copper panel with a hand hammered and oxidised finish by Burchiellaro which creates a beautiful organic interplay between the light and darker shades of copper patination and the way the light bounces off the the hammered surface resulting in a rich and almost tortoise shell quality to its appearance - very fine indeed. Please refer to main listing image which shows the rear face of the mirror. This is a rare and beautiful design which is rarely seen on the market and definitely one of the high points of Burchiellaro's oeuvre. A rare opportunity . Dimensions:- Overall dimensions: 70.85 inches tall x 31.5 inches wide (mirror glass at widest point ) x 21.65 inches deep (aluminium base) 180 cm tall x 80cm (mirror glass at widest point ) x 55cm deep (aluminum base) the mirror element on it's own measures :- 62.5 inches tall x 31.5 inches at widest point X 0.5 inches thick 159cm tall by 80cm x 12mm thick The sculptural form cast aluminum base element measures:- 16.5 inches high x 27.5 inches x 21 .65 inches deep 42cm high x 70cm wide x 55cm deep.

Morgana mirrors by Cortesi & Chiappa-Catto 1970, published CASA VOGUE, Signed
By Angelo Cortesi and Sergio Chiappa-Gatto
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Superb and super rare pair of MORGANA mirrors designed by Angelo Cortesi and Sergio Chiappà -Catto. The frames of these mirrors are finished in aluminum brushed orthogonally to create a wonderful three dimensional op art interplay of light and shadow from a simple flat surface. This design clearly imbues the influence of important italian artist Getulio Alviani's masterful series of 'superficie a testura vibratile' (surfaces of vibrating textures). The central square opening was designed to either accomodate a mirror or a jewel like object of choice or a photo , a cameo etc. This is documented in the Formaluce February 1971 article. The Morgana mirrors were artisan produced in 1970 for the exclusive 'Forme e superficie' (forms and surfaces) gallery in Turin ,Italy. Both mirrors retain their original manufacturer's labels. 'Forme e superficie" employed some of the most brilliant local artists, designers and sculptors such as Nerone and Patuzzi to produce art and design pieces in exclusive small editions. Cortesi and Chiappà -Cattò are well known for their beautiful 'Cicindela'and 'Angolo' light sculptures also produced by Forme e Superficie. The Morgana mirrors were published in:- CASA...
